Hilary is a New Zealand Outdoor Instructor Association certified grade two kayak instructor. Based out of Palmerston North, her training ground includes the Manawatu and Rangitikei Rivers. Hilary has competed in both the Coast to Coast and the Southern Traverse.

Hilary’s Grade Two River Racing Courses

(suitable for Coast to Coast; Gold Rush etc)


OVERVIEW – Grade Two River Courses

Course is usually:

Day 1

  • Pool 8:00am-9.30am (Freyburg pool in Palmerston North)
  • Rescues, confidence intro paddle strokes and maybe a roll tidy up
  • Drive to Mangaweka – early lunch
  • Intro whitewater kayak - a couple of hours in whitewater kayaks learning rivers, eddies, rapids, wave chains, hazards.
  • All going well there may also be a chance to try out your long boat in a few rapids

Day 2

  • About 18-20k's in long boats for certificate stuff
  • Use of rudder, ferry gliding, avoiding obstacles – and other paddlers…picking lines, running rivers Getting your boat where you want it, having a plan b, or a plan c...

Swimming is compulsory at some stage – we need to see you get to the shore with all your equipment (self-rescue) also to receive a throw bag

Course $400 each including accommodation on Saturday night, kayak and equipment hire, pool entry.

  • Oct 4-5 (probably full up)
  • Nov 1-2; 29-30
  • Dec 13,14

Midweek available from Nov 17 at this stage

2 x 12km : some people find it beneficial to do the same stretch a couple of times - it would be assumed that u would already have done a course or be a bit proficient - not race mode but not full on teaching mode

Sunday Oct 19: Saturday Nov 15

50k (utiku- vinegar hill - not race mode, but steady - option to pull out at mangaweka if required) Sunday Nov 16 $150 Or midweek after that

WAIMAK trips
Jan 2009 16-21 inclusive

Recommended to do two trips - one to experience it and one to improve or recognise landmarks or try another boat if possible

What about upgrade courses / rusty paddler / new boat familiarisation / more pointers...?

The Sunday of each course is the most suitable time to come for this – Cost: not more than $100
Also privately mid-week $150

Whitewater instruction

Otaki river: $95 – excellent for getting used to eddies and rapids – either come up to Palmerston North first for a go at rolling ($60 extra) or just meet at the café in Otaki

Absolute beginners also need to meet in Palmerston North first for wet exits and intro paddle strokes.

Only an hour from Wellington – not suitable for multisport boats but excellent for confidence and reading rivers. Grade 2-2+
